Boston Bound

Massachusetts State House
We're moving to Boston!!!

I'm excited, I really am. Over the summer, I'll be getting my condo on the market, packing everything up, and planning cross-country driving routes. I'm looking forward to real seasons and cheap lobster. Heck, I may even trade in my Acura for a Subaru.

But...

I'm an L.A. girl, born and raised. I have lived here my entire life, except those three years of law school in exotic, far-away San Diego. I love this city, warts and all. And let me tell you, there have been some big, hairy warts. I've seen National Guard tanks roll through my hometown during the race riots. I've been stranded at flooded intersections during El Niño. I don't bother to get out of bed for any earthquake less than 6.0. We've been through a lot, L.A. and me. It will always be home.

So, I have some mixed feelings. I know, without a doubt, that this is a good decision for us, and I want to approach this move with a sense of adventure, not dread. But I will miss the sunshine, the Pacific Ocean, the laid-back attitude, and (yes) even the 405. Sigh.

Onward.

  2. Hello Merry Wife, That is exciting news. I am sure that you will love Boston--do you know yet what area you are going to be living in? For a short time, I lived in Waban (Newton) and worked in Boston, and it was one of my favorite periods.

There is so much in Boston and Massachusetts/New England--so much history, architecture, libraries, colleges, and museums, all top-notch, yet different from the specialties of the West Coast.

Congratulations, and keep us updated on your progress.

    1. Thanks, Parnassus! I am not exactly sure where we will be. The easiest option would be to move back into his house in Woburn, which is currently being rented out. If we start a family though, we'd probably move to a town with a better school district (Lexington, Reading, and Newton are all possibilities). I really like Winchester, but apparently, you have to bring your own trash to the dump, and the Merry Husband is having none of that!

  3. When you move to a completely new area it is important to make an effort where friendship is concerned - it is no good hanging around waiting for people to come to you.
Good luck with your move, it will be very exciting, and I know that it is a beautiful area.

    1. Rosemary, you're absolutely right. I'm a member of the Junior League here, so I'll transfer to the Boston chapter once I move. Nothing like doing some volunteer work to make you feel connected to your community.

  6. Oh, I hear you. D and I have finally agreed to move out of London next year, and although it means moving somewhere friendlier, quieter, more beautiful and, in my case, moving home, it also means ... eek.

I wish you so well for the move, though! I am *very* envious of the cheap lobster. And (on the interweb at least!) it looks beautiful. I look forward to seeing more of it through your blog!

    1. I am really starting to look forward to the move. I've been quiet here lately because we've been trying to get the condo ready to put on the market. Lots of packing and cleaning! I'm hopeful we'll move by August 1. (Eek, indeed!)

  7. Dear MW,
I am so late in my blog reading!
I haven't been there but the New England area seems to be a wonderful place: all that autumn colour!
Good luck with your move. It sounds to me that the travel from one side of America to the other will be just as exciting as the move itself!
I look forward to seeing and hearing all about it!

    1. Thank you so much, Kirk! I'm am excited about the road trip. I think (fingers crossed) that the sale will go faster than expected, so we may extend our road trip out to about two weeks. It would be great to build in some time for sight-seeing. Constant driving gets old after Day 5. :)
